Colin
Brayton is a journalist, editor, and translator residing in Clinton Hill–Fort Greene, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, New York, with his cat, Iggy, AND HIS WIFE, NEUZA MARIA PARANHOS DE ALMEIDA, although he is currently Webcasting from the Vila Madelena district of back from a long sojourn in São Paulo, Brazil, with side trips.
He is a native of South Pasadena, California, but spent most of the nineties
studying toward a doctorate in comparative literature at the University
of California, Berkeley, where he taught undergraduate courses in composition,
rhetoric, philosophy, literary theory and plain old literature. The dude set out for Egypt in late 1996 and wound up in Brooklyn instead (long story), where life has been, well, interesting. Colin has freelanced for publications ranging from Artforum to Forbes and was copy editor at Internet World magazine for an interesting and hectic year, during which he wrote on a variety of topics related to business technology and the technology business.
Colin is a graduate of Pomona
College, with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and literature. Current freelance freelance beats for Securities Industry News include,d securities exchanges, broker-dealers, global custody, international accounting and risk-management standards, and stuff like that energy, knowledge management and e-learning, the golden age of e-transformation: past or future?, information architecture, low life, Web art, and Islam in America.
Colin sometimes hangs out at the Well, Media Bistro
the Five Spot Supper Club, and Tillie's, and is a Syndic8 evangelist, with the official decoder ring to prove it. Colin used to edits The Hairy Eyeball, which NYC Bloggers put on the map, and also used to slaves for Aquent and Copy Desk. On top of Colin's to-read shelf at the moment is a history of Brazil, a novel by Ingo Schulze, the memoirs of Stefan Zweig, and the recently reissued works of the Brazilian writer Hilda Hilst, which he is translating with a critical introduction for publication later this year. The radio's tuned to WBGO in Newark and Radio Free Virgin. Latest video rental: Buñuel’s Exterminating Angel. Next rental: American Gothic. On the laptop is an electronic edition-in-progress of Lane's Arabian Nights for Project Gutenberg, an Arabic-language history of the Maronite and Druze in Lebanon, a 17th-century Latin manuscript in facsimile, and various writing projects, including a regular column on the energy scene for Abraxas Energy. Some of Colin's experimental writing has appeared in Plasmotica. Colin keeps a silver trombone in the closet which he sometimes even tootles, and sometimes lapses into the third person when speaking of himself..
Colin has not updated this profile for a long time. Colin is alive and well and still living in Brooklyn, may have a new job to report soon. Colin's latest interests are algorithmic trading, market microstructure, and leveraged buyouts. Oh, and Java for Linux. He's getting far afield from British Romantic Poetry, but it all hooks up at some point.
