Last Update: August 9, 2004

It has been nine months since I updated this page, and almost that long since I have visited it. A variety of family issues have required my attention and taken my focus away from online networking.

If you have tried to reach me through this page or left me messages to which I have not responded I apologize. Things continue to be very hectic and I've been forced to cut back on the number of interaction points I track. I will return to Ryze when time and family permit. Thank you for your understanding.

Innovation

The graphic above originated back in 1999, when I was organizing a small, private creativity workshop I called BizStorm!2000. I really just had an idea that I could bring together people from different environments and viewpoints and create a rich, brainstorming session. Starting in November of 1999 I began planning and inviting people to participate. I set up an eGroup (now part of Yahoo!) so participants could collaborate, and we began developing ideas, topics, and agenda items.

In the end a varied group of about a dozen people, from as far away as Arizona and Texas, came to Atlanta to participate. We had a facilitator who helped us do improv, group brainstorming, etc. It was a blast. Maybe with Ryze I'll be able to connect with a similar group and once again begin to have some "Serious Play".

Ryze Tech Support

I recently had some trouble updating my Ryze Homepage. I couldn't figure out why so I sent a note off to Ryze Tech Support around noon on a Sunday. By 4:00PM I had an answer! I was blocking my IP address/URL with my proxy filter, and Ryze needed to check the IP address before allowing changes. This is a security measure that lets Ryze track who is changing a page in case there is a problem. All I needed to do was add ryze.com to my bypass list so their system could confirm changes and everything was fine. Thanks to Ryze Tech Support for such quick response.

Learning thru Failure

As a very young boy growing up in the late 1960s and early 1970s I was mesmerized by a European form of motorcycle racing called motocross. Later I had my own bikes and raced, both offroad and road course, through my mid-20s. I remember a saying one of my racing mentors used, every time we took a soil sample:

"You never know how fast you can go until you fall off. People who don't fall off aren't racing, they're just riding around."

Clearly, if you fall off all the time you'll never win, but his point has stayed with me through the years -- don't fear failure, embrace it. For only through failure do we learn to get better.

My GeoStats

Check out my neighbors in real space.

GeoURL is a web service that reads latitude and longitude data and generates a list of web sites that are within 500 miles of you. You add a little metatag to the header of your web page, then let GeoURL ping your page to retrieve the map coordinates. GeoURL then runs through its database and generates the list of your neighbors -- an interesting exercise to learn who's around you, and a unique take on managing presence.

myConyers is a community portal for my little exurb southeast of Atlanta. I always tell people that Conyers was made famous in the opening scene of the original, 1977 "Smokey and the Bandit" movie when truck driver Cletus Snow tells Bandit that he's "...goin' over to Conyers to pick up a load of manure." I suspect that's not how the Chamber of Commerce wants to be known, but that's how I first heard of it.
